After briefly serving on the faculty at the University of Utah, I moved back to my home state in 2000, joining the University of Oklahoma. I currently serve as the David C. Steed Chair in Accounting at the Price College of Business. I previously served as Division Director for the Steed School of Accounting, Associate Dean for Faculty and Research, and Interim Dean of Price College of Business.
Teaching:
Teaching is the best part of my job. I enjoy showing students the dynamic nature of accounting and helping them think more critically about the role of accounting in business decision making. My primary teaching philosophy is to engage students. I believe student engagement means actively seeking new ways to connect to students, grab their attention, understand how they learn, motivate them, convey a sense of joint commitment to their education, and help them develop skills they’ll need for their business careers.
Research:
My research interests include accounting information in capital markets, earnings manipulation techniques, the importance of financial disclosures, and financial statement analysis. I believe publishing academic research has helped me to think critically about measurement, reporting, judgment, and the economic consequences of accounting decisions. These are the insights I can bring directly into the classroom. It also allows me to introduce students to current issues and emerging trends, helping them see accounting as a dynamic, evolving field rather than a set of static rules.
Family:
Most of all, I love spending time with my family. I’m married to Julee, and we have four children and five grandchildren. My hobbies include tennis, golf, biking, the outdoors, puzzles, and all family activities.
